Frequently Asked Questions

Is it legal to buy guns online in Kentucky?

Yes. Purchasing firearms online is completely legal in Kentucky. Federal law requires all handguns and long guns purchased online to be shipped to a licensed FFL dealer in your state. You then complete the standard background check (ATF Form 4473 and NICS) at your local dealer before taking possession. Kentucky has no waiting period, so if you pass the background check, you can take your firearm home the same day.

What is a Glock switch?

A Glock switch (also called a selector switch or auto switch) is an aftermarket accessory that attaches to the rear of a Glock pistol’s slide. These devices modify the pistol’s rate of fire. We carry switches in multiple colors including black, blue, gold, green, and silver. Some models like the Flatback Invincible feature a dual-mode semi/full selector design. The AR-15 Lightning Link is a similar device for AR-15 platforms.

What is a Forced Reset Trigger (FRT)?

A Forced Reset Trigger is a drop-in AR-15 trigger that uses the bolt carrier group’s rearward motion to reset the trigger automatically. The Rare Breed FRT-15 is the most well-known model, along with the Wide Open Trigger (WOT), Fostech Echo (binary trigger), Alamo-15, and Para-15. These are drop-in replacements requiring no gunsmithing — they fit standard mil-spec AR-15 lower receivers.

What are Polymer 80 parts?

Polymer 80 (P80) parts include 80% lower receivers, frames, slides, barrels, and build kits. An 80% lower is an unfinished receiver that requires the buyer to complete the final 20% of machining (drilling the fire control group pocket). We carry 80% lowers for AR-15, AR-10/.308, AR-9 (9mm PCC), and Glock-compatible frames. We also stock slides, match barrels, build kits, and jigs needed to complete the lower.

What is Kentucky’s minimum age to buy a handgun?

Federal law requires you to be at least 21 years old to purchase a handgun from a licensed dealer. For long guns (rifles and shotguns), the minimum age is 18. Kentucky follows federal law on these requirements. You must present a valid government-issued photo ID at your FFL dealer when completing the transfer.

Does Kentucky have a waiting period for gun purchases?

No. Kentucky has no mandatory waiting period for firearm purchases. Once your background check is approved through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), you can take possession of your firearm immediately. If your check results in a delay, federal law gives the FBI up to 3 business days to complete the check before the dealer may proceed.

Can I carry a gun in Kentucky without a permit?

Yes. Kentucky enacted constitutional carry in 2019 (HB 530), allowing any person 21 or older who is legally permitted to possess a firearm to carry concealed without a state-issued permit. Carrying openly has long been legal in Kentucky. Kentucky still issues CCDW (Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon) permits for those who want them, particularly for reciprocity purposes when traveling to other states.

How much does FFL transfer cost in Kentucky?

FFL transfer fees in Kentucky typically range from $20 to $50 per firearm. The fee is set by and paid directly to the receiving FFL dealer — not to us. Fees vary by dealer. Many gun shops in Louisville charge $25-$35 for a standard transfer. You can find FFL dealers near you using the ATF’s Federal Firearms Licensee search tool at atfonline.com or through sites like GunBroker’s FFL finder.
